Linguistic competence

Students will be taught to:

Listening: understand and respond to spoken language

  • demonstrate general and specific understanding of different types of familiar spoken language on a
  • range of themes
  • identify the overall message and key points from spoken language
  • deduce meaning from more complex spoken passages
  • to distinguish between the past, present and future events
  • to answer questions on spoken material, extract information, evaluate and draw conclusions.

Speaking: communicate and interact in speech

  • communicate and interact effectively in speech for a variety of purposes across a range of specified
  • contexts
  • take part in a short conversation, asking and answering questions, and exchanging opinions
  • speak spontaneously, responding to unexpected questions
  • narrate events, and produce extended sequences of speech
  • to use the past, present and future tenses with relevant time markers
  • initiate conversations through questioning
  • use of a variety of vocabulary and grammatical structures, including reference to past, present and
  • future events
  • add creativity and complexity to spoken language
  • develop strategies to sustain communication

  • meaning and key details, drawing inferences from what is written

  • translate a short passage from the assessed language into English

Writing: communicate in writing

  • communicate effectively in writing for a variety of purposes across a range of specified contexts
  • write short texts, using simple sentences and familiar language accurately to convey meaning and
  • exchange information
  • produce extended pieces of writing, presenting facts and opinions
  • to use the past, present and future tenses with relevant time markers
  • to use a variety of vocabulary and grammatical structures, showing manipulation of language, and
  • creativity
  • translate sentences and short texts from English into the assessed language, conveying key
  • messages and applying grammatical knowledge

Year 10

GCSE Themes

The new GCSE specification covers three distinct themes. These themes apply to all four question papers, Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

Students are expected to understand and provide information and opinions about these themes relating to their own experiences and those of other people, including people in countries/communities where Spanish is spoken.
